Think You Have Cockroaches? How To Tell And How They Can Affect Your Family

You may not see a cockroach in your home in the beginning, and when you do see one, you likely have a lot of them. Instead of looking for the insects, look for the signs they leave behind. Before they take control of your life, below are some ways you can tell and how they can affect you and your family.

What They Eat

Cockroaches will eat just about anything they can find but especially are drawn to things like paper, plastic, fabrics, animal matter, such as from a rabbit or hamster cage, and packaging. If you leave any kind of dirty dishes sitting on your countertop or your sink, the cockroaches will be there.

Signs You Have Cockroaches

Cockroaches leave behind their excrement, which is generally brown in color and very small. Check for excrement on walls, in corners of floors, underneath your sink, or any other dark place. You will also see shed skins as young cockroaches shed their skin as they become adults. There may be an unusual odor in your home.

How Quickly They Multiply

Cockroaches can multiply quickly. For example, German cockroaches are generally found in homes. A female German cockroach can produce anywhere between 30 to 48 eggs during one laying cycle (they have about 4 of these). Imagine having a lot of females in your home and how quickly this adds up.

Cockroaches at Night

Cockroaches tend to come out at night when everyone is asleep. Make it a point to get up one night and turn the lights on in the kitchen very quickly. If you have a lot of cockroaches in your home, you will likely see them scurrying around on your countertops or other areas trying to hide from you.

How They Can Affect You

If you or anyone in your home has allergies, the symptoms may become worse if you have cockroaches. A big sign is if the allergy symptoms pop up when it is not allergy season. Cockroaches cannot cause you to become sick but if there is any type of bacteria in your home they can spread it around very quickly. For this reason, you may notice family members getting sick more often, such as with diarrhea or infections.

If you think you have cockroaches, contact a pest control company like Emery Exterminating immediately. The sooner you take care of this problem, the better. If cockroaches are found, the pest control company may need to come back and spray your house more than once to rid your home of them.
